Art&Seek Jr. is one mom‘s quest to find activities to end the seemingly endless chorus of the “I’m Bored Blues” while having fun herself.  Impossible you say? Check back on Tuesdays for kid-friendly events that are fun for adults, too.

It’s that magical time of year again. No, I’m not talking about spring, spring fever or even spring cleaning. This weekend marks the final countdown before April 15, or, as it’s more commonly known–Tax Day. It’s that time of year where accountant friends disappear and procrastinator friends panic.

I like to celebrate Tax Day by taking advantage of a fabulous entity paid for by tax dollars. It’s known to everyone, but not used by nearly enough of us. That’s right, I’m talking about the public library. Here are a few fun calendar suggestions to help you enjoy a service available to all.

Take part inThe Big Read Dallas, the citywide, month-long program designed to promote literacy by visiting one of the cities’ branches. Among the numerous events (you can check them out here on the Art&Seek calendar) is a fun one this Saturday at the at Children’s Center at Dallas’ downtown Central library.  Kids can join the Writer’s Garrett as they journey through the totally awesome The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore by William Joyce. If your kids loved the movie Rise of the Guardians, they’re going to love this.  While you’re at the library, be sure to grab a copy of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451,the Big Read book selection, for yourself.

It’s not a library, but if you’re wanting to bring a book to life–specifically the novel Little Women,  then head over to Dallas Heritage Village on Saturday and check out at its annual Plow, Plant, and Shear Day (also known as Girl Scout Day) this Saturday, April 13. Modern day “Little Women” can try all sorts of activities inspired by the Civil War-era classic such as;  taking a quiz to find out which March sister they are most like; entering a Little Women character costume contest; or playing a round of croquet or badminton. Girls can also try on a hoop skirt and do chores like the March girls did every day. Maybe this will convince a few that vacuuming up the kitty litter isn’t so hard after all.

Okay, so Little Women might be a bit girly for the boys in your household but not to worry.  April 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Emily Fowler branch of the Denton Public Library boys ages 7 to 10 years old are invited to join the yuckiest book club ever.  At B.O.Y.S. (Boys Only Yucky Stories) your little man can read and talk about funny, yucky and gross stories. This month’s read is The Maze of Bones (39 Clues #1) by Rick Riordan. But wait, if that’s not enough, they’ll also get to take part in funny, gross or downright bizarre projects, too.

Break out the tutu and the Batman cape, on Monday, April 15 at 2 p.m. the Central branch of the Nicholson Memorial Library in Garland is having a  Fancy Nancy and your Favorite Superhero event Monday, April 15 at 2 p.m. The tinies can have the time of their lives participating in Fancy Nancy or super heroes activities like tiara and mask crafts, personalized bat symbol creation, relay races, and taking pictures in a photo booth. Don’t forget to wear your super hero or Fancy Nancy attire for added fun.
