‘Birdston Valley Revival’ Opens Tonight

by Stephen Becker 7 Mar 2013 10:14 AM

Tonight, Richardson artist Jon Flaming unveils the art show that was inspired by a chance meeting with a piece of Texas history.

CTA TBD

Baptism Sunday, by Jon Flaming

If you were listening to KERA last Thursday, you might have heard my story on Richardson artist Jon Flaming. He’s created a series of pieces that tell the story of Birdston Valley, a community in Navarro County that was founded by former slaves. Their descendants still care for the land, and some of the proceeds from Flaming’s new show at David Dike Fine Art in Dallas will assist them in that effort.

Neat, huh? You can get your first look at the art tonight from 5-8 during an opening reception at the gallery. Flaming will be there, as well as many of the people who told the stories that inspired his art. As far as I know, this will be the first time they’ve seen the artwork, so it should be interesting to see their reactions – particularly to the pieces that were created directly from scraps from Birdston.

If you can’t make it tonight, the show will be up through April 14.
