Art&Seek Jr: Last Minute Ideas for Spring Break

by Therese Powell 5 Mar 2013 4:16 PM

This week in the Junior, some cool camps for spring break.

CTA TBD

Art&Seek Jr. is one mom‘s quest to find activities to end the seemingly endless chorus of the “I’m Bored Blues” while having fun herself.  Impossible you say? Check back on Tuesdays for kid-friendly events that are fun for adults, too.

Here I was thinking that I still had loads of time to sign Rose up for a fun camp for spring break. After all, weren’t we just singing Christmas carols? So yesterday I happened to glance at a calendar and was shocked to realize that spring break is next week! Is it just me, or did it totally sneak up on you, too, this year?

Fear not! Here are some nifty ideas to keep the little campers from going stir crazy while they’re out of school next week.

How about a little drawing? Photo: Oil and Cotton

Art camps are always a good bet for the wee Picasso in your house. Oil and Cotton is offering a veritable cornucopia of spring break camps for kids 6 and up that are sure to please budding artists of all persuasions. Different techniques and media are used each day so kids can sculpt a baby bunny on one day and weave a dreamcatcher the next. You have your choice of half-day or day-long camps or staying all week in the studio. These same camps will be offered again the week of March 25-29 for those of you whose spring break falls later in the month.

Teen artists looking to expand their AP portfolio should check out the spring break art bootcamp at Caprichos Studio. The studio offers a 3D workshop in paper mache techniques and a 2D workshop in Linocut Printing.

How about a little fresh air? The Trinity River Audubon Center has a whole week’s worth of outdoor fun planned for kids in grades K -5 with their Audubon Adventure Day Camps. Little campers can hike, track wildlife, learn birding and other outdoor skills at the beautiful facility in the Great Trinity Forest. Be sure to check out my personal favorite – the owl prowl on Monday.

Got a kid who loves animals? Consider a camp at the SPCA. Photo: SPCA of Texas

The Frontiers of Flight Museum is hosting a “staycation” event that is perfect for those of you wanting to spend a little quality time with your munchkins. Monday, March 11 through Saturday, March 16, the museum will have exhibits and activities each day the whole family will enjoy, including a flight simulator laboratory from 10:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.

Finally, in my search for something a little different, I came across a spring break camp for kids who love animals put on by the  SPCA of Texas. Open to children ages 8 to 11, this camp is perfect for kids who love nothing better than hanging with the four-legged set. Activities include interacting with animals, guest speakers, games as well as opportunities to learn more about the SPCA of Texas and issues in animal welfare. Those interested should act fast, because there are just a few spots open. If you miss out for spring break, not to worry. Registration for the summer camps begins April 1.
