The New York Times reports that Broadway star Brian Watts has been cast in the lead role in the Lee Adams-Charles Strouse musical, It’s a Bird … It’s a Plane … It’s Superman for a seven-performance run in the Encores series of concert versions of musicals, starting March 20.
The 1966 show failed commercially but the score has always attracted fans — and with Spider-Man on Broadway, why not the Man of Steel? The Dallas Theater Center presented a re-written version of the show in 2010, directed by Kevin Moriarty with a script by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Unfortunately, DC Comics wasn’t about to see a wholesale revision of its famous characters, so there was only so much that could be done with the original story. The NYC show will be directed by John Rando and music direction by Robert Berman — no word in the Times whether this production will feature Aguirre-Sacasa’s script.
