DMA Goes Hot Off the Presses This Year

by Jerome Weeks 14 Jan 2013 10:42 AM

Think of it as an early spring thaw. The Dallas Museum of Art will release three books just in the next few months through the Yale University Press — more than it’s done in a typical year.

CTA TBD

The Dallas Museum of Art has had a long relationship with the prestigious Yale University Press, going back at least to the 1990s with director Richard Brettell and his studies of French Impressionists. But according to its latest catalog, YUP will distribute no less than three DMA-related books just this spring. (They’re officially published by the DMA, but Yale distributes them.)

Perhaps the best known subject — already — is to be found in Hotel Texas: An Art Exhibition for the President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy — which is about an impromptu art exhibition installed in the Kennedys’ Fort Worth hotel room when they stayed there in November 1963. Artworks included pieces by Picasso, Monet, Eakins and Marsden Hartley. Both the Dallas Museum of Art and the Amon Carter Museum announced last fall they would be showing the re-created exhibition later this year — as part of the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination. The book will contain essays by DMA associate director Olivier Meslay and Fort Worth cultural historian Scott Grant Barker, among others.

The two other DMA-related works are guides to different parts of the museum’s Asian collection: The Arts of India, Southeast Asia and the Himalayas at the Dallas Museum of Art with an essay by Anne Bromberg, the DMA’s curator of ancient and Asian art, among others, and The Eyes of the Ancestors: The Arts of Island Southeast Asia at the Dallas Museum of Art, edited by Reimar Schefold, professor emeritus of anthropology at the University of Leiden. The pub date for Eyes of the Ancestors is July; the other two will be released next month.

Among its many non-DMA-related publications, Yale University Press will also be releasing Queens and Mistresses of Renaissance France this April, written by Kathleen Wellman, the chair of SMU’s history department.
