The Dallas Museum of Art will not be the new home for Leonardo da Vinci’s painting Salvator Mundi.

The museum announced today that the painting has been returned to its owner.  The DMA has hosted the work at least since summer, attempting to find the money to purchase it.  It hasn’t been on display, but potential donors have been invited over to take a peek.  And “tens of millions of dollars” were indeed pledged to purchase the work, according to a museum press release. But after several weeks of negotiations, the owner declined the museum’s offer. DMA spokeswoman Jill Bernstein declined to say how much the museum was willing to pay for the piece.  Its asking price was around $200 million, Art in America reported.
