Friday Morning Roundup

by Stephen Becker 7 Dec 2012 7:29 AM

Today in the roundup: Reviewing ‘Jekyll & Hyde,’ a tour of local galleries and the Carter’s book binge.

CTA TBD

DUAL THREAT: The national tour of Jekyll & Hyde is currently taking up residence at the Winspear Opera House. If you’ve only heard one thing about the show, it’s probably that former American Idol contestant Constantine Maroulis is playing the title role. The reviewers like him for the most part, but how’s the show overall? “This is slick and polished, and if it’s a little too clean-looking for a Victorian horror tale, that should be beneficial in the long run,” Mark Lowry writes on dfw.com. “It’s an easy-to-swallow potion that should guarantee success, again, on the Broadway stage.” Lawson Taitte was also mostly pleased. “If you have a taste for Jekyll & Hyde, which often veers dangerously towards schlock, this version is certainly a new take on the material, executed with a weird but persuasive virtuosity,” is how he wraps up his dallasnews.com review. Catch the show through Dec. 16.

PARTNERS IN ART: You could make the argument that any gallerist is only as good as the artists he or she represents. But when the right gallery reps the right artist, that’s where careers are made. In its current issue, Modern Luxury asked five local gallerists to talk about a significant regional artist that they rep. The conversation is interesting, but even if you don’t know the names, the feature is worth checking out for the beautiful black-and-white photos that accompany it.

A BUNDLE OF BOOKS: Did you know that the Amon Carter Museum of American Art has a research library? And that the museum is adding books to it by the boadload? A post on the Carter’s blog says that in November alone, 183 titles were added, which the museum deems “a lean month.” The list of new books is included in the post.
