by Stephen Becker 28 Nov 2012 7:41 AM

Today in the roundup: A trio of theater season announcements, a book store closing shop and reviewing WaterTower Theatre’s It’s a Wonderful Life.

CTA TBD

SEASON ANNOUNCEMENTS: A trio of local theater troupes has announced the lineups for their 2013 seasons. Second Thought Theatre will feature work by Martin McDonagh and Neil LaBute during its four-show season. Nouveau 47 announced its three-show season, as well as some leadership changes. And Trinity Shakespeare Festival is going with one comedy (The Taming of the Shrew) and one tragedy (Julius Caesar) when it returns to TCU in June.

A DEPARTURE: Jokae’s African American Books and Custom Framing is closing its Camp Wisdom Road store. The shop moved there in 2003 and had been in business since 1993. “The book sales were just not there,” co-owner Til Pettis tells Mike Merschel on the dallasnews.com books blog. Mike’s also got details on an appreciation event for the store to be held in December.

LISTEN UP: WaterTower Theatre is putting a new spin on a holiday classic. It’s taken It’s a Wonderful Life and turned the film into a staged radio play, with five actor playing more than 50 characters. So how smooth is the transition? “It’s difficult not to simultaneously picture the iconic movie scenes in your head, but the cast and director Mark Fleischer are successful in seizing the story as their own,” Lindsey Wilson writes on Front Row. ” At certain moments the breakneck changes seem impossible, but like the underbelly of a magician’s trunk or the frown on a prima ballerina, these actors show us their hand—wiping the sweat off and dodging to their seats for a drink of water,” Lauren Smart writes on theaterjones.com. “After all, this play’s conceit is that the show’s actual audience is on the other end of a radio frequency.” Catch it through Dec. 16.
