WRESTLEMANIA: For The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity, the Dallas Theater Center has turned the Wyly into a wrestling ring, giving the audience a ringside seat. And from reading the reviews, it sounds as if this is a seat you want to secure. “So what makes The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity two entertaining hours in the theater? It’s [playwright Kristoffer ] Diaz’s and his characters’ way with words,” Lawson Taitte writes on dallasnews.com. “Probably a quarter of those words would be unprintable in this newspaper, but their verve and wit and the way they pull you into all the explanations of wrestling as a sport and an art build the fantastical story inexorably.” Punch Shaw was also a fan. “The cast here is outstanding, and the wrestling moves look about as real as they do in the big wrestling leagues,” he writes on dfw.com. And Lindsey Wilson writes that the play holds up a mirror to ourselves. “Thanks to playwright Kristoffer Diaz and director Jaime Castañeda, audiences at the Wyly Theatre are exploring issues of class, race, and entertainment while discovering their suppressed bloodlust,” she writes on Front Row. Catch Chad Deity through Nov. 11.
QUOTABLE: “Music is a different world. That is what is so exciting about a performance. The audience and I go to this different world and we inhabit it together for a moment.
