THE ICEMAN COMETH: Val Kilmer will be the guest of honor at this year’s Art of Film fundraiser for the Dallas Film Society. Kilmer is probably best known for playing Iceman in Top Gun, Batman in Batman Forever and Jim Morrison in The Doors. But I’ll take his portrayal of Doc Holliday in Tombstone as his greatest role. Anyhoo, the event is Nov. 16 at the Hall of State in Fair Park. Elvis Mitchell, who very capably interviewed Robert Duvall and John Lithgow at previous Art of Film events, will again serve as MC.

HANDS OFF: You no doubt heard about the Rothko painting that was defaced on Sunday at the Tate Modern in London. The attack raises new questions about how museums ride the line between allowing the public an up-close look at the art vs. protecting it. To get a little perspective, The Wall Street Journal talked to some people in the museum biz about possible solutions. Unfortunately, eveything comes with a cost. “I’d like to see a Plexiglas case around it, too, but I’m a security guy,” Robert Wittman, the founder of the FBI’s National Art Crime Team, said about priceless works like Munch’s The Scream, which will hang at MoMa later this month. “I doubt the curators would want that.”
