DSO Names Replacement Pops Conductors

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra has named two of the conductors who will replace the late Marvin Hamlisch during this year’s pop series.

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra has named two of the conductors who will replace Marvin Hamlisch during this year’s pop series. Hamlisch died suddenly in August after a brief illness.

Jeff Tyzik will lead the DSO in Simply Sinatra Oct. 26-27 and return March 29-30, 2013 for a performance with the orchestra and the Quebe Sisters Band. The Richard Kaufman will step in for the Wicked Divas concerts May 31-June 2, 2013.

DALLAS, TX (September 19, 2012) – The Dallas Symphony Orchestra welcomes back Jeff Tyzik and Richard Kaufman as conductors for three 2012-2013 DSO Pops Series concerts. Jeff Tyzik will lead the DSO in Simply Sinatra October 26-27, 2012 and will join the Quebe Sisters Band and the DSO March 29-30, 2013; Richard Kaufman will lead the DSO in Wicked Divas May 31-June 2, 2013. These conductors have been named after beloved Principal Pops Conductor Marvin Hamlisch passed away August 6, 2012. A tribute to Marvin Hamlisch will begin the Simply Sinatra program, to be conducted by Jeff Tyzik and featuring vocalist Steve Lippia.

Jeff Tyzik leads the DSO in Pops programming during the DSO’s annual residency at Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival. He is the Principal Pops Conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and also appears as a guest conductor with orchestras such as the Boston Pops, the Cincinnati Pops, the New York Pops, the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl.

“Marvin Hamlisch was a giant in the music business,” says Jeff Tyzik. “His compositions for stage and screen will stand the test of time and be with us for generations. I’m honored to be a part of a tribute to this great artist.”

Richard Kaufman is Pops Conductor Laureate of the DSO, and begins his 22nd season as Principal Pops Conductor of the Pacific Symphony. He also appears as a guest conductor with orchestras such as the Colorado Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony and the National Symphony in Washington, DC. Kaufman has devoted much of his musical life to conducting and supervising music for film and television productions, as well as performing film and classical music in concert halls and on recordings.

“Whenever a composer passes on, it leaves a void,” says Richard Kaufman. “How fortunate that Marvin’s music remains for all to enjoy and remember.”
