Afternoon Delight: So You Want to Write a Fugue?

by Jerome Weeks 31 Aug 2012 12:59 PM

What you need to do is spelled out for you — thanks to Glenn Gould and some fancy bar-graph animation.

CTA TBD

Afternoon Delight is a daily diversion for when you’re just back from lunch, but not quite ready to knuckle down to work. Check back weekdays at 1 p.m. for another one.

This one explains itself. Glenn Gould originally composed the piece, So You Want to Write a Fugue? for a CBC-TV show. And now it gets a bar-graph animation — but with the lyrics as part of the animation. But what the animation does — for those of us who are musically illiterate — is to lay out the stairstep/mirror relationships of a fugue’s different voices, the way they intertwine, separate, echo and repeat.
