Thursday Morning Roundup

by Stephen Becker 16 Aug 2012 7:37 AM

Today in the roundup: Checking out some new local galleries, cocktails inspired by art and assessing the Chicago tour.

CTA TBD

NEW KIDS IN TOWN: The latest edition of Art This Week explores a couple of new galleries. First, Gina and Dustin Orlando talk about their new Dragon Streeet space, Circuit 12 Contemporary. And Elissa and Erin Stafford discuss Red Arrow Contemporary, which is just down the street.

GOOD TASTE: What does a work of art taste like? That’s what Dena Peterson, executive chef at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, has been thinking about lately. And she’s come up with a cocktail menu of drinks that pair well with works in the museum’s permanent collection. You can see a slideshow of the art paired with the drink it inspired on huffingtonpost.com.

ALL THAT JAZZ: The national tour of Chicago is currently taking over the Winspear Opera House. Saw it on opening night, and my one word review is: Go. But let’s hear from the experts, shall we? “In this bare bones production, no set and only the skimpiest of costumes, the dance shines and sparkles like the Hope Diamond set on a pillow of black velvet,” Gregory Sullivan Isaacs writes on theaterjones.com. Lawson Taitte reserves special praise for Kecia Lewis-Evans, who plays the prison warden Mama Morton. “If you’ve never seen Chicago onstage before, or if you’ve seen the revival a dozen times, she’s a great reason to go — or go again,” he writes on dallasnews.com. Roger that. Chicago runs through Aug. 26.
