Tuesday Morning Roundup

by Stephen Becker 12 Jun 2012 7:55 AM

Today in the roundup: Choreographing ‘Jersey Boys,’ the Amon Carter goes Modern and summer at the DMA.

CTA TBD

JUKEBOX ROCK: Jersey Boys, one of the biggest hit musicals of recent years, opens tonight at the AT&T Performing Arts Center. The show charts Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons’ rise from average New Jersey Joes to Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famers. Sergio Trujillo choreographed the show, which he says was a challenge. But he did have one small advantage. “The Four Seasons didn’t really dance; they just stood behind the microphone,” he tells theaterjones.com. “So, I had the great opportunity to create choreography that I thought The Four Seasons would do knowing what we know now and giving them a sense of style.” Catch Jersey Boys through July 16.

AMERICAN VANGUARDS: The Amon Carter Museum of American Art is best known for its collection of Western Art. But it’s going modern for its current exhibition, “American Vanguards: Graham, Davis, Gorky, de Kooning and Their Circle, 1927–1942.” And the show has Scott Cantrell impressed. “The Fort Worth show focuses attention on a fertile period of American artistic interactions too little known, understood and appreciated,” is how he sums up his dallasnews.com review. Catch it through Aug. 19.

THE HEAT IS ON: The first day of summer isn’t technically until next week, but after yesterday’s 95 degree day, I think we can safely proclaim (sigh) it’s already here. To mark the occasion, the Dallas Museum of Art’s Uncrated blog has posted a collection of photos of visitors spending time on the museum’s lawn in the 1960s and 70s. A lot of people seem to be wearing suits back then, so maybe that proves global warming or something?
