Julia Dyer’s ‘The Playroom’ leads an impressive-looking list of early selections for this year’s festival.

VideoFest 25 isn’t for another four months or so, but today the festival announced the first five selections that will play during its Sept. 27-30 run at the Dallas Museum of Art.

Certainly the one with the most buzz locally is The Playroom, directed by Dallas’ Julia Dyer. It follows a group of kids who find escape in elaborate storytelling as their parents take part in some high-level debauchery downstairs. (I did a little preview of the film as part of our looking forward to 2012 series at the end of last year.) Dyer co-wrote the script with her sister, Gretchen, who died in 2009. It debuted at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival to strong reviews.

Also on the docket are the North Texas shot documentary The Mayor; Alan Govenar’s The Beat Hotel – about the American Beats in Paris; Austin-based choreographer Allison Orr’s Trash Dance; and the documentary The Stages of Edward Albee.
