Although Theatre Three won’t be announcing its new season for a few more days, executive producer Jac Alder confirmed that the company will be presenting the Tony Award-winning musical, Avenue Q, in its professional, North Texas-produced premiere. It will open in June. [UPDATE: Mark Lowry of TheaterJones informed me I needed to add ‘professional’ to my description of the Theatre Three production because, rather surprisingly, Music Theater of Denton already staged Avenue Q hereabouts a couple weeks back.]
The irreverent take on Sesame Street and on young singles living in the Big Bad City won three Tony Awards — including beating Wicked for best musical. The national tour of Avenue Q came to the Winspear Opera House in 2010 and, once the New York production shifted back to an off-Broadway home, has continued to run successfully there.
Alder said there’s a possibility the show may have an extended run in Theatre Three’s basement space, Theatre Too. The theater is waiting on a grant to upgrade the space, he said, and if the grant comes through — and the show’s ticket sales remain healthy — Avenue Q may stay past the theater’s standard run of four weeks for twelve weeks or more. Michael Serrecchia, who staged Theatre Three’s The Drowsy Chaperone, is set to direct.
