Candy Buckley and Charity Jones in A Delicate Balance at the Guthrie Theatre

Having brought back former Dallas Theater Center acting company members (and audience favorites) Randy Moore, Nance Williamson, Akin Babatunde and Kurt Rhoads to act at the DTC, artistic director Kevin Moriarty is now having Candy Buckley return — after 18 years.

The tall red-headed actress was best known for her leading roles in director Adrian Hall’s All the King’s Men. She’ll be playing in Next Fall by Geoffrey Nauffts, directed by Moriarty. In another unusual bit of casting, Terry Martin — producing artist director of the WaterTower Theatre — will also be acting in the Broadway drama about two gay men, one an atheist, the other a devout Christian and what happens when they must depend on family support. The show previews April 13.

DALLAS (Wednesday, February 22, 2012) – Dallas Theater Center announced today the cast of Next Fall, which runs at the Kalita Humphreys Theater April 13 – May 6, 2012.

Terry Martin and DTC Brierley Resident Acting Company member Steven Michael Walters will lead the cast as Adam (Martin) and Luke (Walters).  Martin is Producing Artistic Director at WaterTower Theatre and is making his DTC debut.  Walters is Co-Artistic Director of Second Thought Theatre and appeared in this season’s productions of The Tempest and A Christmas Carol.

Former DTC Acting Company member Candy Buckley will return to DTC for the first time in 18 years to play the role of Arlene.  Buckley was part of the acting company from 1978 – 1990 and audiences will remember her from All the King’s Men (86-87) and The Cherry Orchard (93-94).  Southern Methodist University Associate Professor, Head of Acting Michael Connolly will play Butch.  DTC audiences will remember him from last season’s production of Dividing the Estate.

Rounding out the cast are Lynn Blackburn (Dividing the Estate) as Holly; and DTC Brierley Resident Acting Company member Lee Trull (The Tempest, Cabaret, Arsenic and Old Lace) as Brandon.

DTC Artistic Director Kevin Moriarty will direct the Tony-nominated Next Fall, which was written by Geoffrey Nauffts.  Returning to DTC are Tony Award-winning scenic designer John Arnone (Dividing the Estate); costume designer Thomas Charles LeGalley (Give It Up!); and sound designer Bruce Richardson (Dividing the Estate).  Making her DTC debut is lighting designer Natalie Robin.

The critically acclaimed Next Fall opened on Broadway in 2010 and was nominated for two Tony Awards in the same year – Best Play and Best Direction of a Play.  It tells the story of Adam, an atheist, and Luke, a devout Christian.  When an accident changes everything, Adam must turn to Luke’s conservative family and friends for support.

DTC Brierley Resident Acting Company members Hassan El-Amin, Matthew Gray, Sally Nystuen Vahle and Christina Vela will star as two sets of parents who get together to discuss their sons’ little playground dust-up.  El-Amin (Uncle Henry and The Wiz in The Wiz; Northumberland in Henry IV) and Vela (Mistress Quickly in Henry IV; Helen in Fat Pig) will play Michael and Veronica Novak.  Gray (Heck Tate in To Kill a Mockingbird; Son in Dividing the Estate) and Vahle (Miss Maudie in To Kill a Mockingbird; Fraulein Kost in Cabaret)  will play Alan and Annette Raleigh.

DTC Associate Artist Joel Ferrell will direct God of Carnage, by award-winning playwright Yasmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton.  Scenic designer John Arnone will return to DTC for the third time this season, following designs for Tigers Be Still and Next Fall.  Also returning this season after working on Next Fall are costume designer Thomas Charles LeGalley, sound designer Bruce Richardson and lighting designer Natalie Robin.

God of Carnage won three Tony Awards in 2009 – Best Play, Best Leading Actress in a Play and Best Direction of a Play – and was turned into a movie titled Carnage, directed by Roman Polanski.  After the Novak’s and the Raliegh’s 11-year-old sons get into a little playground fight, the parents meet to discuss the matter as civil adults.  As the conversation continues, irrational behavior and immature arguments take over.
