TACA ANNOUNCES GRANTS: For the fifth year in a row, TACA will provide $1 million in grants to local arts groups, the organization announced Monday night. The grants range from $5,000 to Garland Summer Musicals, the Irving Chorale and other similarly sized groups to $100,000 for the Dallas Opera, Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Dallas Theater Center.

TOONS ON TOUR: If you know Don Hertzfeldt for one thing, it’s his Oscar-winning animated short Rejected, in which he uses little more than black lines and flashes of color to make one of the classics of the genre. (Never seen it? Drop everything and watch it now.) But the Austin-based animator has been up to plenty in the decade plus since Rejected, including completing a trilogy of shorts. The last installment debuted at Sundance this month, and Hertzfeldt is taking the films out on a mini tour. “When you put your movie on TV or DVD, millions more people are going to see it, but I can’t see them see it unless I’m in their bedroom or something,” he tells indiewire.com. “A lot of this is just for my sake, to see the thing play and talk to people afterwards.” The tour comes to the Texas Theatre Feb. 17.

THE DIGITAL LOMAX: Alan Lomax would have been 97 years old today. The native Texan died in 2002, but his efforts to record traditional American music live on. His archive – which includes 5,000 hours of recordings, among other materials – is being digitized and will be accessible online. And, according to nytimes.com, you’ll be able to listen to a lot of it by the end of February.
