Tuesday Morning Roundup

by Stephen Becker 13 Dec 2011 7:49 AM

Today in the roundup: Liz Mikel talks her Broadway debut, remembering a Texas author and local music bits.

CTA TBD

LIZ TAKES MANHATTAN: Liz Mikel, who you’ve no doubt seen on North Texas stages for years, is making her Broadway debut with Lysistrata Jones. The show began life at the Dallas Theater Center as Give it Up!, and Mikel has stuck with it all the way to its Broadway opening. But she’s not making too big of a deal about her big moment. “Having done this professionally for 20 years now, I didn’t want to psyche myself up and say, ‘Oh, this is Broadway,'” she tells the Associated Press. “It’s another show. This is what I do. I’m grateful it has this geographical location, but it’s what we do.” One aspect that does excite her, though, is the dressing room she shares with another cast member in the Walter Kerr Theater. It’s previously housed everyone from Lauren Bacall to Elaine Stritch to Ben Stiller.

AUTHOR JAY MILNER DIES: Jay Milner, an author who also taught journalism at SMU, died on Sunday, according to dallasnews.com. He was 88. You might remember him from his 1998 book, Confessions of a Maddog: A Romp Through the High-Flying Texas Music and Literary Era of the Fifties to the Seventies.

LOCAL MUSIC BITS: The history of the Fort Worth music scene is the subject of a new book called Fort Worth’s Rock and Roll Roots. (dfw.com) … Starting today, AEG will handle ticketing at the Verizon Theatre and Palladium. (dallasnews.com) … Denton’s Matthew and the Arrogant Sea recently recorded a four-song set for Daytrotter.
