SERIOUS FANS: Not sure how I missed this fun story from Sunday, but The New York Times has taken note of how baseball crazy some Dallas Symphony Orchestra musicians are. On Saturday night, many of them crowded around the TV in the musicians lounge to catch up on Game 3 during intermission. Meanwhile, co-concertmaster Nathan Olson wore a Rangers cap – catcher’s style – as he tuned the orchestra. Not sure what they are going to do if the series goes to a Game 7 – the orchestra plays its first Scheherazade program Thursday night.
A CALL TO ‘ARMS’: Over the weekend, Stage West debuted its staging of George Bernard Shaw’s Arms and the Man. In the comedy, a woman engaged to a military hero is conflicted when an enemy soldier seeks her help. “The play gets laughs — and makes you think,” Lawson Taitte writes on dallasnews.com. “The play’s three acts skewer along with witty repartee, faux danger, intimations of torrid titillation and a predictable and utterly satisfying cheesy denouement,” Alexandra Bonifield writes on criticalrant.com. Catch it through Nov. 27.
TOGETHER AGAIN: A pair of landscapes painted by Claude-Joseph Vernet has been reunited at the Dallas Museum of Art. The paintings hung together in a collector’s home but were sold to different buyers when the collector died. The DMA’s Uncrated blog has more, including information on an upcoming gallery talk focusing on the paintings.
