The LATimes reports that the movie chain is being accused of what the industry calls “circuit dealing” — using their size and buying power to leverage film distribution away from their rivals, in this case, a recently renovated, arthouse multiplex in Palm Desert in California. One of the owners is Bryan Cranston, the great, Emmy Award-winning star of Breaking Bad.
The case, says the Times, is being closely watched (and cheered on) by independent houses across the country. The case, says Cinemark, which owns 3,850 screens, is without merit. It was dismissed by Los Angeles Superior Court, but now has been revived in an appellate court.
