SURPRISE FUNDING FOR THE ARTS: The big talk of Monday’s budget amendment supported by the Dallas City Council was the removal of one of the furlough days for city employees. But if you dig a little deeper, you’ll also see that the Office of Cultural Affairs and city libraries will benefit significantly. Nearly $500,000 in extra money will go to the OCA for programming, the community artist program and the AT&T Performing Arts Center. Additionally, the libraries will get $140,000 for materials. The extra funds come from higher-than-expected revenues from franchising fees and parks department buildings. The amendment should be made final on Sept. 28.
SARAH RETURNS: Sarah Jaffe has plans for a full-length album in 2012 – the followup to her much-lauded Suburban Nature. But to keep fans satiated until then, on Sept. 27 Jaffe will release The Way Sound Leaves a Room, a CD/DVD that includes live concert footage, covers, alternate takes and the like. And as luck would have it, Paste magazine is offering a live stream of the songs. If that has you wanting more, Jaffe will perform at Good Records on Monday, when some of the DVD footage will also be shown.
A CLOSER LOOK: The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth’s blog has posted a nice slideshow of photos inspecting some of the building’s details. “When I begin to draw, I know what kind of detailing I want the building to have,” Tadao Ando, who designed the building, tells the blog. That’s pretty evident after looking through the photos.
