Afternoon Delight: The Mash-Up Master

by Jerome Weeks 16 Sep 2011 12:59 PM

Mashing up Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, as wicked-cool as it initially seemed, really just wed two kinds of heavy metal. So how about Stevie Wonder … and Metallica? Headbanging with a funky brass section. It even gets Grover dancing.

CTA TBD

Afternoon Delight is a daily diversion for when you’re just back from lunch, but not quite ready to get back to work. Check back Monday at 1 p.m. for another one.

Sometimes the basic idea of a music mash-up seems utterly deaf (and not the good def): Why not “Incense and Peppermints” and, oh, “Wu Revolution” by Wu-Tang Clan? But when you hear it, it meshes so well, you can’t believe it’s not the way the songs were intended. Like Wax Audio’s combo of Led Zepp’s Whole Lotta Love with Black Sabbath’s War Pigs — already a classic mash.

Now Wax Audio bridges a much bigger divide and pulls it off. Ladies and gentlemen: Stevie Wonder plays Metallica. Or Metallica adds some great, thick, sludgy bass and guitar to Superstition.

So — believe in things that you don’t understand.

Thanks to the Daily What.
