As a whole, Texas received 14 grants totaling more than $2 million from the $40 million awarded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.  (In comparison, California received $3.2 million.) Much like its sister organization, the National Endowment for the Arts, the NEH has seen its budget slashed and currently, its future is uncertain, given the rancorous, cut-at-any-cost atmosphere in Washington.

Notable projects in North Texas include an oral history program ($40,000) about the nature of historical memory and the JFK assassination — for use in schools and museums, developed by the Dallas County Historical Foundation (which runs the Sixth Floor). As part of the National Digital Newspaper Program, the University of North Texas is seeking to digitize 100,000 pages of Texas newspapers from 1860-1922 ($325,000).  And for $300,000, the University of Texas at Arlington wants to build a cold-storage vault for some five million historic, photographic negatives.
