Thursday Morning Roundup

by Stephen Becker 21 Jul 2011 8:02 AM

Today in the roundup: A Dallas filmmaker makes a big list, previewing Gorilla vs. Bear Fest and recording the Kimbell addition.

CTA TBD

ONES TO WATCH: Filmmaker magazine has named the 25 New Faces of Independent Film – 2011. And one of those faces should be familiar to anyone who’s stopped by this site with any regularity. Dallas’ David Lowery tells the magazine that the Internet has been his film school. “I was blogging in 1999, before blogging was even a word, and I’ve kept it up. I didn’t go to film school, so seeing someone mentioning a title online and then going and watching it and exchanging ideas about it in the blogosphere — that’s been my education.”

PREVIEWING GORILLA VS. BEAR: If you’re all in a tizzy over the first Gorilla vs. Bear Fest at the Granada, you’ve got plenty of reading to occupy your time between now and Saturday. Preston Jones previews the show at dfw.com.  Meanwhile, Quick and the Observer speak at length with GvB founder Chris Cantalini about how he managed to pull this thing together.

RECORDING RENOVATION: If you’ve been over by the Fort Worth museums lately, you know the work on the Kimbell Art Museum addition is well under way. The process interested Adam Silverman, who has been documenting it through a project he calls Reverse Archaeology. In a nutshell, he hopes to make work from the discarded materials found around the construction site. Glasstire talked with Silverman recently about his plans for all those scraps.
