Friday Morning Roundup

by Stephen Becker 8 Jul 2011 8:03 AM

Today in the roundup: A most talented Wiz, AFFD announces its lineup and pictures from a Fort Wort art show.

CTA TBD

A WIZ-BANG WIZ: The Dallas Theater Center starts previews of The Wiz tonight at the Wyly Theatre. The production brings in talent all the way from Broadway as well as just down the street at the Dallas Black Dance Theatre. Lawson Taitte talks with two of the stars of the show – Liz Mikel and Denise Lee – in his dallasnews.com preview. And remember – tonight is the “Ease on Down the Road” block party in the Arts District. The night culminates in a pay-what-you-can performance of the show.

AFFD SKED: The Asian Film Festival of Dallas has announced the schedule for this year’s event, which runs July 14-21 at the Magnolia Theatre. Among the highlights are a new Jackie Chan movie (Little Big Soldier) and a 35mm screening of Seven Samurai. This year’s opening night actually doesn’t feature a film. Rather, AFFD is having a big party to celebrate its 10th anniversary. And you can actually attend. Being a veteran of many AFFD get-togethers, I recommend that you do.

NOW WITH PICTURES: Yesterday we pointed you to a fwweekly.com post about a unique art show at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center, in which private collectors pick one piece of Texas art from their collections to display. If you’re wondering what you might see at the show, now we’ve got a few pictures to pass along.
