Kitchen Dog Theater Announces 2011-12 season

Dallas- Kitchen Dog Theater, now in its critically-acclaimed twentieth season, proudly announces a power-packed lineup for its 2011- 2012 season. The brand new season promises to be one of the best yet, featuring a schedule of five daring and dazzling mainstage productions, most of which will be premieres for the region. Kitchen Dog Theater’s 2011-2012 season truly invites their audiences, as their mission statement boldly declares, “to be provoked, challenged, and amazed”.

“Season 21 features five powerful new plays from some of Kitchen Dog’s favorite authors”, says KDT Co-Artistic Directors Christopher Carlos and Tina Parker.  “These actor-driven stories are a testament to the rich traditions of Kitchen Dog, bringing into sharp focus a mission statement that is still as vital to the present company as when it was founded.”

Kitchen Dog Theater’s 2011-2012 season schedule is as follows:

(All dates and programs subject to change)

IN THE NEXT ROOM, OR THE VIBRATOR PLAY by Sarah Ruhl   * Regional Premiere*
““A fanciful but compassionate consideration of the treatment, and the mistreatment, of women in the late 19th century, [IN THE NEXT ROOM, OR THE VIBRATOR PLAY is a] spirited and stimulating (sorry) new comedy from one of the country’s brightest young playwrights” – The New York Times

The Play:  At the dawn of the electrical age, a new medical device is developed to pacify “hysterical” women, but it produces a shockingly different result.  This richly textured comedy about marriage, motherhood and the charged energy between our bodies was nominated for three 2010 Tony Awards and was a finalist for the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The Playwright: MacArthur Fellowship recipient Sarah Ruhl’s plays include THE CLEAN HOUSE (Susan Smith Blackburn award, 2004), MELANCHOLY PLAY, EURYDICE, LATE: A COWBOY SONG, ORLANDO, and PASSION PLAY. In 2003, she was the recipient of a Helen Merrill Award and a Whiting Writers’ award.

Director: KDT Company Member Jonathan Taylor
Theater: Heldt/Hall
Dates: September 9- October 8, 2011

26 MILES by Quiara Alegria Hudes * Regional Premiere*
“26 MILES combines some of the far-out theatricality of Hudes’s earliest plays with the structural control of ELLIOT. Olivia’s private journey is a wild, once-in-a-lifetime road trip with her mother—a fantasy made real. It is Philadelphia meeting the landscape of the Wild American West, with all the longing and abandon that convergence implies.” – American Theater Magazine

The Play:  Eight years after a Cuban mother loses custody of her Jewish daughter, she is given a second chance.  At 4:30 in the morning she kidnaps the sick teenage girl and the two drive west in search of a remedy and their divergent American dreams.

The Playwright: Quiara Alegria Hudes is a resident writer at New Dramatists and the Joyce Fellow at the Goodman Theatre.  Her plays include Broadway’s Tony Award-winning Best Musical IN THE HEIGHTS, BARRIO GRRRL! (book and lyrics, Helen Hayes nomination for Theater for Young Audiences), A SOLDIER”S FUGUE (Pulitzer Prize finalist), and YEMAYA’S BELLY (The Clauder Prize).

Director: KDT Co-Artistic Director Tina Parker

Theater: Heldt/Hall
Dates: November 11 – December 10, 2011
**No Performance on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 24**

COLLAPSE by KDT Company Member Allison Moore  *NNPN Rolling World Premiere*

“Moore skillfully builds her comedy as much from character and evolving situations as she does from jarring juxtapositions of topic and tone… As therapeutic as Moore makes it to laugh at the characters’ complex problems – and attendant therapies – by the end, they’ve earned their compassion.” – San Francisco Chronicle

The Play:  Hannah is trying desperately to hold the façade of her perfect life together, even as her husband mysteriously calls in sick to work day after day.  The couple struggles with infertility, and Hannah herself is on the verge of being laid off.  When her sister appears on their doorstep, she brings with her a feisty, renegade attitude and an illicit package that sends the family on an odyssey into some of the quirkier corners of Minneapolis and into the heart of their deepest fears.  This comedy about surviving and transcending was inspired by the 2007 collapse of the Mississippi River Bridge in Minneapolis.

The Playwright: Allison Moore’s work has been developed or read at the O’Neill Playwrights Conference, Williamstown Theatre Festival, InterAct Theatre, and Manhattan Theatre Club; and produced at KDT, Actor’s Express, Actors Theatre of Louisville, and The Playwrights’ Center, among others. Ms. Moore has received two Jerome Fellowships, a McKnight Advancement Grant, and the Iowa Arts Fellowship.

Director: KDT Co-Artistic Director Christopher Carlos

Theater: Heldt/Hall

Dates: February 3 – March 3, 2012

THE TURN OF THE SCREW by Henry James; adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher

“A rich, supercilious mystery man. A spooky old house. Two beautiful but enigmatic children. An innocent, friendless young governess. And plenty of eerie apparitions…let the shivers fall where they may?” – The New York Times

The Play: A naïve young woman is hired by an enigmatic, wealthy Londoner to care for his orphaned niece and nephew.  Once at his remote country estate, ghostly phantoms begin appearing to the governess, leading her to question her sanity, and the children’s innocence.

The Playwright: Jeffrey Hatcher’s award-winning plays have been performed on Broadway, Off-Broadway and regionally across the US and abroad.  His work includes THREE VIEWINGS, SCOTLAND ROAD, A PICASSO, and the adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Louis_Stevenson>’s novella, THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, where, as in THE TURN OF THE SCREW, few actors play many roles.   His screenplays include STAGE BEAUTY, CASANOVA, and THE DUCHESS.
