Last week, North Texas arts organizations received 10 grants from the National Endowment for the Arts — for a total of $275,000. All of the grants were in the Access to Artistic Excellence program which awarded some $24.9 million (“Grants in this round focus on two primary themes: access to the arts and preservation activities”). The North Texas grants varied in size from $15,000 to support the Dallas Opera’s School Performance program to $85,000 for the Dallas Museum of Art’s online access. They also include money to support a Afro-Caribbean stilt dancing progra, a rural Texas tour for the Fort Worth Symphony and an annual literary translators conference (UT-Dallas has an important program in literary translation).

In this multidisciplinary and multicultural collaboration with Brooklyn Jumbies (stilt dancers in the Afro-Caribbean tradition) and Mexican artist Laura Anderson Barbata, artists will visit area schools in underserved communities to perform, teach workshops, and share the cultural history of their work.
