Welcome to the Tuesday Roundup!

by Jerome Weeks 3 May 2011 8:06 AM

Graeme Jenkins is going, but a new block of onyx comes to the Dallas Museum of Art, Andrew Jackson wins and Ballet Frontier of Texas rises — all in the Tuesday roundup.

CTA TBD

TRAVELING MAN: You may have heard the big news — Graeme Jenkins will be stepping down as the Dallas Opera’s music director after the 2012-13 season. He wants to conduct more in Europe. You may have wondered why no media outlet had direct word from Jenkins himself. Well, yesterday, he couldn’t be reached. He was traveling in Europe.

NOT SO BLOODY: Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, the acclaimed rock musical that Theatre 3 announced it will present in its 50th anniversary season, just won off-Broadway’s Lucille Lortel Award for outstanding musical. (Which reminds us: Broadway’s Tony Award nominations are coming out today.)

BALLET RISING: Founded in Fort Worth only last year by Chung-Lin Tseng, Ballet Frontier of Texas “continued its slow, steady rise Saturday night with one of the oldest extant ballets, La Sylphide,” wrote Mark Lowry for the Star-Telegram. “It’s also Ballet Frontier’s first non- Nutcracker full-length performance.” Well, the company stumbled a bit, writes Cheryl Callon for Theater Jones.

GONE SHOPPING: Uncrated, the Dallas Museum of Art’s blog, explains how the DMA goes about acquiring things — like “She,’ Bojan Šarčević’s block of onyx (left), which will makes its public debut May 29 with the DMA’s new show, Silence and Time.
