Dallas Connections Among the Tony Nominations

by Jerome Weeks 3 May 2011 9:48 AM

Artists who’ve worked recently at the DTC have four, count ’em four, Tony nominations. And then there’s the guy we often seen at the DMA.

CTA TBD

So The Book of Mormon leads this year’s Tony noms. More imp0rtantly, Todd Rosenthal, who designed the ’60s-style house for the Dallas Theater Center’s Trinity River Plays, has been nominated for best set design for a play for The Mother …. with the Hat (he won previously for designing August: Osage County). And set designer Beowulf Borritt, who’s done the honors at the DTC for Superman, Tommy and Give It Up! among others, has been given a nod for best musical set design for The Scottsboro Boys. Douglas Carter Beane, who wrote Give It Up!, shares a nomination for best musical book for Sister Act, and speaking of The Book of Mormon, Andrew Rannells, who performed in Give It Up!, is up for a best lead actor in a musical Tony Award.

Also, John Benjamin Hickey, a frequent performer for the Dallas Museum of Arts’ Art & Letter Live series, is nominated for best featured actor in a play for The Normal Heart. The award winners will be announced June 12.
