Friday Morning Roundup

by Stephen Becker 4 Feb 2011 8:04 AM

Today in the roundup: A big time animator among us, how pointe shoes are made and a programming note.

CTA TBD

WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD: If you go see the Oscar-nominated animated film The Illusionist at the Angelika Film Center in Dallas, you might be sitting next to a couple of people who worked on the film. Justin Hall, an assistant animator on the film, and his wife, Fiona, who was the film’s production manager, recently moved to Dallas from Edinburgh, where the film is set. “This film has a really personal thing for my wife and I because we lived in Edinburgh,” Hall tells dallasnews.com. “The church we got married in is in the movie.” Justin and Fiona were on Think on Wednesday – if you missed the show, you can listen to it/download it.

ON YOUR TOES: With Black Swan doing so well at the box office and Natalie Portman headed for an Oscar, ballet has become inescapable in the public conscious. If you’d like to learn a little more about how those dancers do it, CNN has put together a cool report on how pointe shoes are made. Be sure to scroll through the slide show for the step-by-step process.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: Maybe you’ve watched KERA’s interview with Gene Jones, in which she walks us through the Cowboys Stadium art collection? If you’d like to see it on your very own teevee screen, watch PBS NewsHour tonight at 6 on KERA (Channel 13). They liked the video so much they’re going to show it.
