Friday Morning Roundup

by Stephen Becker 22 Oct 2010 7:12 AM

Today in the roundup: Ruta Lee speaks, the One O’Clock Lab Band plays and Ira Glass sings.

CTA TBD

BACK TO THE LAB AGAIN: The University of North Texas’ vaunted One O’Clock Lab Band has released its new album, Lab 2010. Is it something you should order? Will it be nominated for a Grammy like so much of the band’s previous work? Judge for yourself by watching this video, which features snippets from each track on the CD.

IRA SINGS: If you listen to KERA on Saturdays at noon (or if you listened during the recent pledge drive), you should be familiar with the voice of This American Life host Ira Glass. And if you’ve ever thought, “I wonder if that guy can sing?” now’s your chance to find out. Ira helps out Lucy Wainwright Roche (spawn of Loudon) on her debut album, Lucy, with a duet of Elliot Smith’s “Say Yes.” You can catch a snippet of the song here (fast forward to the 12 minute mark if you’re in a hurry).

QUOTABLE: “Oh Lord, how I love this. Yesterday I went to the market over at Kroger. I probably had to pose for 100 pictures.”

– Local legend Ruta Lee, who returns to the stage in Casa MaƱana’s The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. She talks more about her career with dfw.com.
