Assessing American Dream: WingSpan Theatre Company’s producing two early Edward Albee plays, The American Dream and The Sandbox, at the Bath House. Lawson Taitte at Dallas Morning News loved it, saying the only thing that dates them is some dialogue about new hats. David Novinski at Theater Jones was less enthusiastic. He prefers The Sandbox, but finds The American Dream, once shocking, now almost quaint.
I caught the performances over the weekend, and boy, did they – especially The Sandbox – make me think of Undermain’s production of Samuel Beckett’s Endgame last year. If you saw that, you’ll like seeing Beckett’s influence on Albee here.
Cash Tribute: Can you draw? Do you like the Man in Black? Then you may want to contribute to The Johnny Cash project. Self-submitted drawings of Cash morph into a video accompanied by the song “Ain’t No Grave”. It’s a lovely tribute, organized by director Chris Milk and programmer/artist Aaron Koblin, the same folks who brought you the very viral interactive video “The Wilderness Downtown,” set to an Arcade Fire song. The video’s updated twice a day.
White Night: Front Row got the drop on me yesterday, sharing news of Aurora 2010 – a night of art installations using light, sound or video that will take place at Dallas Heritage Village on Nov. 19. Mark your calendars. Sounds like something to see.
