Guest blogger Danielle Marie Georgiou is a dance lecturer at the University of Texas Arlington. She also serves as assistant director of UT Arlington’s Dance Ensemble.
On Saturday, Muscle Memory Dance Theatre (M2DT) will be hosting auditions for the 2010-11 season.
M2DT is a collaborative company that honors and encourages dance professionals from around North Texas in their evocative use of dance as an organic, communicative art. Established in 2005, M2DT has grown in popularity among audiences of dancers, musicians and arts patrons alike.
Since joining the company in 2007, I have had the opportunity to travel throughout Texas performing and speaking about dance; in November, I lead a gallery talk at the Dallas Museum of Art during the “All The World’s s Stage” exhibition. But more importantly, dancing and training alongside my peers has only made me a better dancer, choreographer and teacher. I have been able to take what we work on as a company into my studio at the University of Texas at Arlington and have exposed my students to professional-level work. Last spring, we were even able to bring in collective member Lauren Guyer as a guest choreographer. The piece she set on both M2DT and the UTA Dance Ensemble was performed at the DMA in June.
As a company, we have all had the opportunity to travel and participate in outreach teaching in local high schools as well as setting choreography within the community colleges of Dallas, Fort Worth and Collin counties. M2DT’s dance works have also been commissioned for Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Texas Woman’s University, Stephen F. Austin University, University of Central Oklahoma and Spelman.
Recently, we have begun to produce shows, creating more performance opportunities for local dance companies and artists. In February 2008, M2DT launched “PILOT,” an annual emerging choreographer showcase. In 2009, we added “iDance,” which features established performers and choreographers from around the country. The second annual “iDance” will open Sept. 17 at the Dallas Hub Theater, featuring the work of Michelle Dexter (Perpetual Motion Modern Dance, Oklahoma), Jennifer Mabus Cook and Robbie Cook (Dallas), Linda Eve Elchack (Nao Dance Company, Florida) and Amy Querin (fresNO dance COllective, California) to name a few.
If you are interested in auditioning and want to see us in action, we offer intermediate/advance modern dance classes at Life in Deep Ellum every Tuesday from 6-7:30 p.m. Come this Tuesday to meet the company and directors in person.
Auditions will take place at Life in Deep Ellum on Saturday from 1-3 p.m. M2DT is looking for two types of members. Company members must be available for all rehearsals, classes and performances. They are also able to teach company classes and choreograph and are asked to perform administrative tasks like PR and grant writing. Collective members are required to attend all classes unless otherwised noted by the directors. They are cast into pieces that suit their rehearsal availablity and are required to attend all rehearsals and performances that they are scheduled for.
