Today in the roundup: Troubles in the Arts District, big ups for Bach and nailing the college audition.

WHAT WENT WRONG?: The recent departures of the heads of the Dallas Symphony and AT&T Performing Arts Center have some scratching their heads wondering what’s going on over in the Arts District. The Dallas Morning News editorial board joined the discussion over the weekend with this editorial about what it all means. The takeaway: shame on the Dallas business community for not better supporting the DSO and shame on the Performing Arts Center programmers for not better recognizing the desires of the community.

BRINGING UP BACH: Circle Theatre has scored quite a coup with the area premiere of Bach at Liepzig. The farce checks in on a group of musicians all auditioning to be the musical director at Leipzig’s St. Thomas Church. It seems everyone wants the job for one reason or another, and only some of that desire comes from a love of music. “All it takes to have fun here is a tolerance for whimsy and a willingness to laugh,” Lawson Taitte writes in his dallasnews.com review. “Circle Theatre has assembled a dream cast of wunderkind performers … under the thorough, fearless guidance of director Robin Armstrong. What results is one of the finest productions of 2010,” says Alexandra Bonifield on criticalrant.com.

BACK TO SCHOOL: What’s it take to get into the best college theater programs? Mary Anna Dennard has the answers. She’s the author of I Got In!: The Ultimate College Audition Guide for Acting and Musical Theater. If the name sounds familiar, she is a Dallasite who has worked for the Kim Dawson Agency developing talent. She recently fielded questions about college theater admissions for the New York Times Arts Beat blog.
