As proposed budget cuts and layoffs are announced, comes word that the Dallas Area Cultural Advocacy Coalition will holds its annual Arts Advocacy Day on August 17 at the Winspear Opera House. The coalition, cultural affairs commissioners, reps from the arts district and arts leaders will be on hand to discuss strategies for reducing the impact of proposed city budget cuts.
Cost is $35; keynote speaker will be Dr. Ray Perryman, CEO of an economic research firm The Perryman Group, who authored a study on the arts’ economic impact for the Texas Cultural Trust.

WHAT: Arts Advocacy Day, an initiative by the Dallas Area Cultural Advocacy Coalition (DACAC), Cultural Affairs Commission, and Dallas Arts District/Downtown Dallas, Inc. Arts Advocacy Day is an opportunity for everyone interested in the arts to learn more about effective advocacy and the economic impact of the arts. The focus of the event is to reduce the draconian cuts proposed by the City of Dallas for the Office of Cultural Affairs which will result in the demise of more than 23% of the local arts organizations. The featured speaker is Dr. M. Ray Perryman, noted Economist and Author of the definitive Economy Impact Study on the Arts in Texas done for the Texas Cultural Trust.

Dr. Ray Perryman is President and CEO of The Perryman Group, an economic research and analysis firm based in Waco, Texas. Dr. Perryman has held numerous academic positions in his career including ten years as Herman Brown Professor of Economics and five years as University Professor and Economist-in-Residence at Baylor University, as well as five years as Business Economist-in-Residence at Southern Methodist University. His current academic roles include Senior Research Fellow of the IC2 Institute of the University of Texas and Institute Distinguished Professor of Economic Theory and Method at the International Institute for Advanced Studies. In the professional arena, Dr. Perryman has authored more than 1,800 trade articles, publishes a subscription forecasting service and a monthly newsletter, writes a syndicated newspaper column, hosts a daily radio commentary, and appears regularly on National Public Radio. He is a past recipient of the Outstanding Texas Leader Award and has been honored by the Texas Legislature for his “tireless efforts in helping to build a better Texas.”
