We wrapped up the master class in Kano today. We screened Kim’s film Welcome to Shelbyville and got a great response. They really got the idea of what a documentary could be.
Later we workshoped and developed some of the students’ ideas, talking about how to expand them, make them deeper and more entertaining, and, thus, more interesting to audiences abroad.
The local filmmakers were really getting it, and then it was over. As often happens, there was a mad rush to get our cards and stay in contact. And then I noticed my iPhone was missing. I looked everywhere and realized that someone had lifted it.
The class asked me to leave the room. Somehow the phone was found on the AV guy. The students were really embarrassed – I heard one say they would cut of they guy’s hand, which really freaked us out.
But after a few dark moments it was OK. We handed them certificates and showed another film (King Cord), had a nice meal and talked and talked and talked.
Off Wednesday morning at 6: 3o a.m., so that is it for now.
