A Wop Bop A Lu Bop: The Wednesday Roundup

by Jerome Weeks 23 Jun 2010 8:04 AM

Say hello to ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ at Lyric Stage and to Broadway composer Charles Strouse, talking on Think today. It’s not goodbye just yet for Ft. Worth’s Ridglea Theatre and an Ansel Adams photo broke an auction record. You can see the snapshot at the Amon Carter.

CTA TBD

HELLOOOOO, BAY-BEEE! – Bye Bye Birdie, the first Broadway musical to dig rock ‘n’ roll — as a teen fad, anyway — has been given an exceptional revival by Lyric Stage, so say the News and FrontRow and Theater Jones and Examiner crickets. The show’s composer, Charles Strouse, is also the musical mind behind It‘s a Bird  . . . It’s a Plane . . . It’s Superman, a revisal of which, you prolly heard, the Dallas Theater Center is opening Friday. And at noon today on Think on KERA 90.1, you can hear Mr. Strouse talk with me about all things Birdie-ish and Supermanic. (The photo is of Billy Lee Riley, the rockabilly great who died last year at 75.)

IT’S NOT BYE-BYE FOR THE RIDGLEA – YET – The Fort Worth Weekly‘s Blotch says we needn’t give up on the venerable venue. They published a letter from Ridglea Theatre co-owner Wesley Hathaway that says, let the Fort Worth City Council know you don’t like the proposed zoning change that may turn it into a branch bank. Plus, it’d help if people supported the place, like, now. Their lease runs through next spring.

GREETINGS, GREENBACKS! – Ansel Adams’ photography — currently on display in the Amon Carter Museum‘s “Eloquent Light” exhibition — broke the record for the highest price paid for an Adams print at auction Monday. The first day of a forced sale at Sotheby’s of the Polaroid company’s photography collection brought in more than $7 million, and in particular, $722,500 for “Clearing Winter Storm, Yosemite National Park,” a large 1938 black-and-white landscape. A print of the photo, below, appears in “Eloquent Light.”
