On Friday night, I had a drink with a 5-year-old.

Well, I was having a drink. He just happened to be sitting next to me. But I have to admit that listening to his chatter was more interesting than any number of conversations I’ve heard in bars.

The occasion was the ‘Til Midnight series at the Nasher Sculpture Center. The event matches a band and a similarly themed movie. On Friday, it was the Beatles tribute band A Hard Night’s Day and the first film featuring the band, A Hard Day’s Night.

I have to admit I was pretty shocked at how full the lawn at the Nasher was, thick with people listening to the band and kids running around entertaining themselves. After the music, the film started on the Nasher’s outdoor screen. And that’s when I was introduced to the chatter box, who was there with his dad.

Toward the beginning of A Hard Day’s Night, Paul, Ringo, George and John exit a train and do their best to avoid the pack of wild girls awaiting their arrival. As the action unfolded, the 5-year-old provided entertaining play-by-play, informing me that “They’re running because they know they’re gonna get mobbed.” When only John, Ringo and George run through a scene, he wondered allowed, “Where’ the fourth?” (He was relived when Paul appeared from behind a newspaper he was reading/hiding behind.) And when the lads escaped the mob unscathed, our narrator exclaimed, “At least they got away safely!”

Definitely the words of someone not yet interested in being chased by girls.
