The British sculptor is best known for her haunting, “negative space” creations — like Ghost (1990), the plaster cast of the inside of a Victorian room (left) — and the Holocaust Monument in Vienna, also called the Nameless Library because it is a concrete cast of thousands of books, with their spines in, a commentary on the Nazi book burnings.

But the exhibition, coming to the Nasher Sculpture Center next May from the Hammer Museum in LA, will be the first, full-scale retrospective of Whiteread’s drawings — continuing the Nasher’s series on artists’ and architects’ sketches.  The show includes her prep work for House, a cast of an entire, torn-down Victorian townhouse — which made Whiteread the first woman to to win the prestigious Turner Prize. After closing in August, the show will go to Tate Britain in London.
