Congratulations to UNT’s One O’Clock Lab Band, which was nominated for a pair of Grammy Awards today. The band’s album, Lab 2009, is up for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album, while the group’s director, Steve Wiest is nominated in the Best Instrumental Composition category for his song “Ice-Nine,” which appears on the album.

Nice work, considering Wiest was only named Neil Slater’s permanent replacement in April. And as luck would have it, the band already has a California tour planned for January, so the musicians will be able to attend the ceremony at the Staples Center in L.A. on Jan. 31.

UPDATE: Here’s a video about the nominations from NBC 5 shot at Thursday’s rehearsal.

I saw these guys over Thanksgiving and thought the performance was wonderful. This is a deserving group and I hope this nomination is a bellwether for the rest of their careers!

  • The One O’Clock Lab Band students and band members will also be sharing via Twitter, photos and video their Grammy experiences on the UNT web site – http://www.unt.edu/jazzgrammys . Check it out.
