This morning, I had a radio story on the Goldfish Girls, a pair of 13-year-olds who DJ every Friday night at Absinthe Lounge at Southside on Lamar. (You can listen to it here.) Unfortunately, I could only fit so much in to 3 minutes 30 seconds, so if that story left you breathless for all things Goldfish Girls, here’s some other interesting tidbits:
- Charly’s father, Kelly Tomlinson, plays bass in the Oak Cliff blues band the Cliff. Charly says she’s learning the bass from him and might form her own band soon. Meanwhile, Paige has added a solo DJing gig on Saturday’s at Absinthe under the moniker DJ Sunflower.
- Both girls are in the 8th grade at Greiner Exploratory Arts Academy in Oak Cliff and hope to attend Booker T. Washington next year. Charly plays in the school band, and Paige is big into drawing (she drew me collection of animals as I was interviewing her).
- And the most startling revelation: They actually named themselves after the cracker and not the animal. Since they picked the name, their tastes have actually evolved to popcorn. So much so that they are considering a name change to (wait for it …) the Popcorn Girls.
