TAKIN’ IT TO THE STREETS: Artist Justin Bua has been in the spotlight of late, primarily because of his hot-selling poster of Michael Jackson released just days after the star’s death. So consider 4th Wall Gallery the beneficiary of some of that new buzz, as it is currently hosting its own show of Bua’s highly stylized images of urban life. NBC 5 spoke with the artist for the video above when he was in town for the opening.

TALKIN’ ABOUT WRITIN’: The Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference packed in the writerly types up in Grapevine over the weekend with a roster full of masters of the spoken and written word. The Morning NewsTexas Pages books blog blanketed the event. Among the highlights are this post from Ira Glass’ key note address on Saturday (dfw.com also covered that one) and this one on Paul Theroux’s talk on Friday. For more on Theroux, listen to Jerome’s interview with him from Thursday’s episode of Think.

THEATER BITS: The Festival of Independent Theatres wrapped up its second weekened at Bath House Cultural Center. • I was very impressed with Justin Bua’s works. I thought they were fun, exciting, and well done. Compositions good, coloring good, subject matter important, lots of drawing skill, and more.
The NBC 5 interviewer called it ‘groundbreaking’ twice. It is not. It is very traditional style of art. Personally reminds me a bit of the undulating work of Thomas Hart Benton.
As good as Bua’s works are, he is not initiating a new type of art like Cubism, or Abstract Expressionism. Nor is it a new form like Picasso and Braque’s collage, or Matisse’s cutouts. Nor is it a new way of showing art such as Giclees, exact reproductions of art on canvas, that help make art the latest mass produced art form.
Yes great, fun, accomplished, art. Groundbreaking? No study your art history a little more.
