Bass Performance Hall will pay tribute to Fort Worth musical icon Stephen Bruton on Sunday, May 17 at 2:00 p.m. at McDavid Studio (301 East 5th Street), with a free concert featuring many of the singer/guitarist/producer’s musician friends. Admission is free; the event is open to the general public.

“He was one of the best, truly one of the best, performers we’ve ever had here,” says Michael Cotham, CFO/CIO of Performing Arts Fort Worth, Inc. “We want to do something special for him and his friends and his family. We want to bring together everyone he knew or touched or influenced – whoever wants to come can come, whoever wants to perform can perform.”

Many of Bruton’s friends will be stopping by, including Dave Millsap and his band; any musician is welcome to perform.

A graduate of Texas Christian University, Bruton was a member of Kris Kristofferson’s band for more than 40 years. The two performed together at Bass Hall exactly one year ago to the day; it was Bruton’s last area performance.

Bruton, who had lived in Austin for the past several years, also performed and toured with Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan and Delbert McClinton; produced career-defining albums by Alejandro Escovedo, Marcia Ball, Storyville and Jimmie Dale Gilmore; and many of his songs have been recorded by Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffett and others.

After a years-long battle with cancer, Bruton passed away May 9 at the home of longtime friend T-Bone Burnett. “He was the soul of Texas music,” Burnett told the Austin American-Statesman. “I learned more from him than I can say.”

“If a man’s life is measured by how many lives he affects, then who could have done a better job of their life than Bruton?” singer-songwriter Jon Dee Graham told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “He leaves a sore hole in this world which will never be filled.”
