In the late 70’s, Ezio Flagello sang the Verdi Requiem with Eduardo Mata and the Dallas Symphony at the Fair Park Music Hall. I was playing the famous bass drum part in the Dies Irae movement. Since the conductor and soloists had to walk right by me on their way to the stage, on opening night Mr. Flagello said in a pretty loud voice, “Knock the hell out of it, kid.” My colleagues and I were very amused and I have often repeated the story.
