If you’ve attend the AFI Dallas International Film Festival the past two years, you no doubt remember that every time you heard the festival’s name, it was immediately followed by, “presented by Target, founding sponsor Victory Park.” AFI is good to its sponsors like that.
This year, however, you will be hearing something different. As in “AFI Dallas International Film Festival, presented by NORTHPARK CENTER, founding sponosor Victory Park.” On Wednesday, the festival announced that the shopping mall has come onboard as presenting sponsor. What does that mean for the festivalgoer? Mainly, that there will continue to be screenings at the AMC NorthPark 15 plus additional red carpet events. And the mall will now be the home for the festival box office.
As someone who has covered his share of AFI red carpets, I’m A-OK with more of them taking place in the air conditioned NorthPark. Plus, it makes the celebrity-watching more fan friendly. Last year, a massive red carpet event was held between the escalators and the giant Mark di Suvero sculpture below the theater, complete with a ring of onlookers from the second floor. As I was interviewing Charlize Theron about Battle with Seattle, she was kind enough to turn and fire up a couple of “I LOVE YOU TOO’S!!” to the upper deck.
It’s not exactly a picture or an autograph, but I’ll bet you those guys were the toast of the 10th grade come Monday.
