TWO-FOR-TWO: Amphibian Stage Productions has struck again. The Fort Worth company had us rolling a few weeks back with its first video, “For the Love — Episode 1,” which features an overzealous artistic director urging a playwright to make “the ultimate sacrifice” for his art. This week, Amphibian delivers “For the Love — Episode 2,” an equally spot-on satire about the company’s attempt to bring in money in a non-traditional way.
Amphibian Artistic Director Kathleen Culebro talked about the series, which she wrote, for the Art&Seek Q&A last week.
FOR THE KIDS: The Austin Symphony just got a whole lot richer this week. Austin arts patron James Armstrong has donated $1 million to the group to endow its children’s education program. The gift will help fun a series of concerts aimed at kids as well as other programs.
ARTFUL STIMULATION: A couple of European countries are looking to jump-start their economies by pumping more money into the arts. The French government is throwing an extra €100 million into its culture budged this year to “speed up cultural projects” in hopes that those projects will encourage more spending. Not to be outdone, Germany has increased its culture budget by 3.5 percent — the fourth year in a row that the budget has gotten a boost. Over on this side of the pond, it’s the norm that arts funding gets cut when times get tough. Hopefully we’ll follow the lead of our European pals and see what kind of return an investment in the arts can make.
