HINOJOSA WEIGHS IN: A few weeks ago, I mentioned in this space that a discussion of the importance of arts education was going on over at artsjournal.com Well, I finally got around to checking back in to see how the conversation went when I stumbled upon an entry from a previously unannounced panelist: DISD Superintendent Michael Hinojosa. As you all know, DISD came up short big time on its budget this year, but you might be relieved to read that the big boss writes that he’s committed to arts education in Dallas:

“The Dallas ISD has committed to funding art and music teacher at all 130 elementary schools. We recently had an unexpected significant budget shortfall. But there was no discussion of reducing our commitment to the arts. We have had significant external support from the City of Dallas, the local arts community and the Wallace Foundation. What was refreshing is that no one waned in the commitment we have made to the arts despite the very public budget difficulties we recently experienced.”

That’s good to hear. Let’s hold him to it.

COMING SOON TO FORT WORTH: Artdaily.org has the details on a blockbuster new exhibit coming to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. On March 14, the museum will premiere “William Kentridge: Five Themes,” a survey of the South African artist’s work. Following its run at the museum, it will head out on a world tour, stopping at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth from July 11 to Sept. 27 before traveling to New York, Paris, Amsterdam, Vienna and other places I’d like to visit.

I have to confess, I’m no expert on Kentridge’s work. But I have come to trust what the SFMOMA sends our way. The last exhibit to be born there and travel here is Take Your Time: Olafur Eliasson at the Dallas Museum of Art, easily my favorite museum experience of last year.
