Speaking of funk music — we were, with South Dallas Pop — Andrew Taylor, director of the arts administration program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a blogger at the Artful Manager, has irrefutably declared that:
Premise: Arts and cultural managers lack an appropriate anthem to their career path — unlike cowboys, truckers, and rock musicians.
Premise: Such an anthem, if it were to be written, should be a funk tune.
Premise: Said funk tune, if it were to be available, should be performed by a middle-aged Caucasian bald man.
And so he offers us his own effort, Arts Administrator (available for purchase or to be heard online).
Sample lyrics:
Who’s that man with the plan for building an audience for the actors?
Who’s that gal making pals with those big symphony benefactors?
Sometimes you might see ’em
Strolling around some well-endowed museum.
You’ll know sooner or later,
It’s an Arts Administrator.
So it’s not James Brown (“Papa’s Got a Brand New Endowment Fund”). But I like “‘Cause you know it ain’t easy/Running a 501c3.”
