Beneath Van Gogh’s painting, “Patch of Grass,” completed in Paris in 1887, was an earlier portrait of an unknown peasant woman, the BBC News reports. Scientists Joris Dik and Koen Janssens used high-intensity X-rays from a particle accelerator to scan the painting and reveal the face beneath. Van Gogh was known to re-use canvases to save money.
